December Post

During break I went to volunteer for 3 hours on the 20th, 22nd-23rd, and 29th-30th. On the 20th, I helped out in the day room with some patients do some activity for Christmas. There was one table doing gingerbread houses and another doing Christmas trees and gingerbread mans. I helped out at the gingerbread man and Christmas tree table.

On the 22nd, I had a task and it was to go to both nurse station and clean out all the research cabinets and take out all the binders. With the binders, I went to the conference office to throw away all the papers inside the binders and the broken binders too.

November Post

On the 3rd and the 10th of November, I spent 3 hours helping nurses on the annual nursing skills day. It is about how well the nurses' skills have been improving and what are the new thing that are being changed in the hospital. The first day I was helping out the wound care table and my roll was to give a little quiz that had to do with the display board and they had to match the picture with the stage of the wound and the display board. Then on the last day the 10th of nurses skills day, I was working at the check in table where all the employees had to check in and get a guide to where they are suppose to go and get a stamp on every station they were supposed to go to. Then they would return the paper and take a survey.

During Thanksgiving Break, I spent my Tuesday and Wednesday mornings helping make admission packets and print papers for the packets for both nurses stations.

Blog 10:EQ

Content

1.   Review this.  Confirm by stating "I reviewed the rule of three for writing an EQ."

Essential Question
Once a topic is chosen, the student will develop a working essential question.  The purpose of the working essential question is to help the student build a strong foundation of research which will allow him or her to create an essential question that encourages depth and rigor in the chosen topic.  An essential question must:

  • Provide a framework for studies (It calls for breadth and depth of research, Is not a yes/no question)
  • Take a stance (It allows you to argue some point, Cannot be a recitation of facts or a list)
  •  Format (It is specific, The wording makes sense)
I have reviewed the rule of three for writing an EQ.

2.  Review the following EQs and

  • Tell us if each meets the rule of three.
  • Tell why they do or don't.
 a.  What is the most important factor in healthy weight loss?
  • Yes, it tells what is the person's topic and can be argued and supported with research.
 b.  What is most important to securing a conviction in a criminal investigation?
  • No, wording doesn't make sense if it was, " What is the most important factor in..."
 c.  What is most important in creating a hairstyle that best satisfies a customer?
  • No, the wording doesn't make sense in the beginning.
 d.  How can an anesthesiologist best treat chronic pain?
  • Yes, the EQ is clear and allows for multiple answers with supported research.

3.  Based on your review of the rule of 3 and your experience with assessing four EQs, please write another draft EQ for your senior project.  The senior team will be meeting with students shortly for EQ revision and approval; you are expected to bring your research notebook to that meeting with your EQ draft written inside in pencil.

Blog 9:Lesson 1 Reflection

1. Positive Statement

What are you most proud of in your Lesson 1 Presentation and why?

I'm proud that even though I was nervous, I got all of my points out and I knew everything that I learned from my research check.

2. Questions to Consider
a.What assessment would you give yourself on your Lesson 1 Presentation (self-assessment)?

I would give myself a P.

       b. Explain why you deserve that grade using evidence from the Lesson 1 component contract.
I deserve  P because I met all of the criteria for a P. I had a props the scrubs, gloves, the face mask, and the hair net, my lesson plan was accurate and on time, and I turned in this on time. I cited my articles and explained how it relates to my mentorship. Also demonstrated on how to put on the personal protective equipment.

3. What worked for you in your Lesson 1?

I think what worked for me is that I made time and I felt like I was very self-explanatory about how to use the protective equipment and how I found some answers for my working EQ.

4.  (What didn't work) If you had a time machine, what would you have done differently to improve your Lesson 1?

If I could go back in time I wish I could of practiced a little more. I had so much information that I wanted to point out but I guess that all the information that I knew kind of didn't come out as how I planned. Also I wished I used note cards so that I have all my information that knew on the cards.

Extra October Post:October

This month at my mentorship wasn't that interesting. I did the same thing every time I went there; file papers, made mission packets for new patients, and put labels on patient's paper work. On the 25th both of nurses station was not busy at the time and I didn't know what to do. So I went to both patient's library/visiting room and organized the bookshelves for like an hour. When it was down to my last hour, I ended up just standing waiting for my hour to end in the east wing of the hospital in the patient library. Then suddenly a nurse was me standing and asked me to go to each patient room and check the glove compartment if they need any more of each size. I did that for a good solid hour until my 2 hours were up. Also this month, I interviewed my mentor and I learned so much about her journey on how she became a doctor in the Philippines and then a nurse here in America.

Blog 8 - Research and Working EQ

1.  What is your working EQ?
  • What is the best way to educate and help nurses in protecting themselves from infectious diseases and illnesses?
2.  What is a possible answer to your working EQ? Please write the answer in thesis format.
  • Nurses that work with isolation patients should be informed about the how to protect themselves with the materials that are given to them.
  • Staffing and other nurses should help each other in educating and training each other on how to protect themselves by using all of their resources.
3.  What is the most important source you have used that has helped you come up with an answer to your working EQ?
  • The most important source that I've used is where I go volunteer at every Saturday, by my observation and talking to other nurses on how they keep their nurses and volunteers protected and informed about ways to not get an infectious disease and transfer it to another patient.
4.  Who is your mentor, or where are you doing mentorship, and how does what you are doing relate to your working EQ?
  • My mentor is Gloria Detabali and she has helped me in the past on understanding the nursing profession, she has told me that working in the profession is a very risky job because not matter how much you protect yourself from not getting the infected with a sickness or disease with vaccines or protective scrubs and gloves, you have a chance in getting it but having the right education and proper training it is possible that it will not get it.

Blog 7: Independent Component 1 Approval

1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.
  • For my 30 hours for my Independent Component 1, I will be watching videos online about nursing. I will also go visit my mentor Gloria at Citrus Inter-Community Hospital and observe and get advice on nursing. I've also kept in mind to take some classes in January that are related nursing like a diabetes class or a patient safety class.
2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.
  • I plan to take pictures of me watching videos and talking to my mentor at the hospital about my topic to show evidence of 30 hours.
3.  And explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.
  • I will create a journal and always keep my Independent Component 1 log up to date on what I learned and observed when mentoring Gloria and videos that I watched and that were recommend by Gloria and other nurses that she works with.
